DISTRIBUCIÓN ESPACIAL Y TEMPORAL DE LA PRECIPITACIÓN Y LA HUMEDAD DEL SUELO EN TRES SITIOS FORESTALES DE LA VIII REGIÓN DE CHILE Agricultura Técnica
A. Bonilla,Carlos; Bonomelli,Claudia; Urrutia,Gonzalo.
Sur y 72°00 y 73°10’ long. Oeste. Desde septiembre de 1993 y hasta agosto de 1996 se registraron las temperaturas, precipitación y contenido de humedad del suelo en cada sitio. Los resultados indican que la precipitación mensual en el sitio de Precordillera no fue...

Finite size scaling in the local abundances of geographic populations Biol. Res.
Abades,Sebastián R; Marquet,Pablo A.
We analyzed the statistical distribution of intra-specific local abundances for a set North American breeding bird species. We constructed frequency plots for every species and found that they showed long-tail power-law behavior, truncated at an upper abundance cut-off value. Based on finite size scaling arguments, we investigated whether frequency curves may be considered scaled copies of each other. Data collapse was possible after taking powers of the total abundance of each species, in order to correct deviations from the underlying universal finite size scaling function (UFSS). The UFSS power law exponent oscillated in time within the regime of unbounded variance, which is consistent with the wild fluctuations that characterize ecological phenomena....

A Quantitative Assessment of the Morphological Characteristics of BeWo Cells as an in vitro Model of Human Trophoblast Cells International Journal of Morphology
Abaidoo,C.S; Warren,M. A; Andrews,P. W; Boateng,K. A.
In order to study the detailed morphology of trophoblast cells during human implantation, BeWo cells were cultured as spheroids in suspension culture. These cultures were then processed for light and electron microscopical examination. The present study showed that the BeWo spheroids consist of two cell types which are cytotrophoblast-like and syncytiotrophoblast-like. The cells with larger nuclear diameter made up only about 1% of the cell population and appear to be those of syncytiotrophoblast. Therefore the predominant cell type of the BeWo spheroids appeared to be relatively undifferentiated and cytotrophoblast-like. About 10% of the BeWo cells in the present study were mitotic, indicating a highly proliferative population. Total cell number increased...

Stability analysis of forage production in Bromus catharticus (prairie grass) using three methodologies Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Abbott,Liliana; Filippini,Susana; Delfino,Hugo; Pistorale,Susana.
Thirteen genotypes of Bromus catharticus (prairie grass) were evaluated for forage production over three years using completely randomized trials with six replicates. The genotype x environment interaction was statistically significant and indicates that the behavior of genotypes differs over time. Once this interaction was detected, we used three methodologies to assess the stability of genotypes: Wricke's ecovalence, the Lin and Binns index, and the Eberhart and Russell model. The methods of Lin and Binns and Eberhart and Russell indicate that genotypes 11, 9, 3 and 4 are stable. They also rule out possible selection of genotypes 2, 10, 1 and 12 for lack of stability or poor adaptation. The correlation among these indices was statistically significant...

The effects of 4-nonylphenol contamination on livers of Tilapia fish (Oreochromus spilurs) in Jeddah Biol. Res.
Abdulla Bin-Dohaish,El-jawaher.
Alkylphenol polyethoxylates is a group of estrogenic compounds. Natural or synthetic types of these compounds react with the endocrine system by binding hormone receptors, resulting in interference with their action, which is why they are called endocrine disrupting chemicals. Among their hydrolytic products are nonylphenols (NP), which are considered pollutants of aquatic environments. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pathological alterations on liver tissue of fish exposed to these compounds for long durations, starting from beginning of life and during the period of sexual maturity. Tilapia fish were obtained from Abhur fish farms, reared in the laboratory in special basins, and divided into two groups. The first maternal group was...

Immature embryo: A useful tool for oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) genetic transformation studies Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Abdullah,Ruslan; Zainal,Alizah; Yew Heng,Wee; Chui Li,Leaw; Chee Beng,Yeap; Mei Phing,Lee; Abdullah Sirajuddin,Salwa; Soo Ping,Winnie Yap; Lourdes Joseph,Juanita; Azma Jusoh,Siti.
Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is the highest yielding oil-bearing crop. However, being a perennial crop, genetic improvement of oil palm is extremely slow. Indeed, compared to other annual oil crops such as soybean and rapeseed, genetic manipulations remained less important. Therefore, to remain competitive, oil palm growers and breeders need new and novel approaches. In this report, the potential of immature embryos (IE) as a useful tool for oil palm genetic transformation studies was evaluated. It was evident that IEs were amenable to both direct and Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer. Due to the abundant supply of IE, optimization of biolistic and Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer into IEs were easily carried out. Transient transformation...
